Postcard from Morocco
Music and Libretto by Dominick Argento
Set to Dominick Argento’s vibrant score, Postcard from Morocco follows a group of strangers waiting at a train station at a time in which they are in search of meaning. While some grapple with uncertainty and the need to hide parts of their identity, others embrace intimate, romantic moments, such as a tender exchange in German, where the audience is invited to feel rather than fully understand. The opera moves beyond a singular focus on any one emotion, offering glimpses into the multifaceted nature of human experience. For some characters, this is a time in which they are hesitant to reveal core facets of their identity, uncertain of how those around them might react. They long to hide, yet desire to be seen. This paradox makes them sharply distinct, with each of the characters emotionally sophisticated and multidimensional. They confront reality in various ways – through paranoia, fantasy, and satire. Each character reflects the myriad ways people cope with uncertainty and seek the connection of others. The eclectic, genre-defying score serves as an emotional roadmap that guides the audience through these internal landscapes. It invites listeners to confront their feelings head-on.
Libretto written by John Donahue and composed by Dominick Argento.
